英雄莫问出处是由元末明初诗人杨基的一首诗中的一句，衍化而成，这首诗名字叫做《感怀》，原诗为：

    邓禹南阳来，仗策归光武。孔明卧隆中，不即事先主。英雄各有见，何必问出处。孙曹与更始，未可同日语。向非昭烈贤，三顾犹未许。君子当识时，守身如处女。

    杨基，字孟载，号眉庵，“吴中四杰”之一，其诗风清俊纤巧，时人称之为“五言射雕手”。元朝末年，杨基曾入张士诚幕府，为丞相府记室，后辞去，明初为荥阳知县，累官至山西按察使，后被谗夺官，罚服劳役，死于工所。

    杨基诗中的邓禹是东汉开国功臣，南阳新野人；更始为刘玄，他是王莽新朝末年，绿林军拥立的一个皇帝，因其年号为更始，史称更始帝，后被被赤眉军沙海。更始即位后，许多人向其荐举邓禹，但邓禹不肯相从，后来他听说光武帝刘秀安定河北，邓禹就驱马北渡黄河，追随刘秀。

    孔明即众所周知的三国时期的诸葛亮，孙曹为孙权和曹操，昭烈为刘备。诸葛亮在出山之前，隐居在隆中，常以管仲、乐毅自比，刘备三顾茅庐，诸葛亮被其诚心所打动，才答应出山，辅佐其逐鹿天下。

    这首诗可翻译为，邓禹从南阳追来，投奔光武帝刘秀出谋划策争夺天下，诸葛亮久居隆中，并不急着去辅佐刘备。这两个英雄都有自己的见识，何必去问他们出身的贵贱。

    孙权和曹操是更始帝刘玄所不能比的人，如果不是刘备贤明，即使他三顾茅庐，诸葛亮也不一定会答应。君子应当分清形势，像处女一样洁身自好，守身如玉。

    本诗通过写邓禹和诸葛亮的事迹，写出了作者心目中的英雄，不一定有好的出身，但是要有自己的主见，能看清形势，时势已至则大展身手，时势未至则静待其时。
